You’ve done a lot to get yourself to this point: you did some research, found Hearts In Rhythm Dance, and booked your first dance lesson! Congratulations – you’ve officially taken your first steps towards a bigger, brighter world!
Now what happens?
It is natural (and common!) for new students to feel a little nervous before that first lesson, mainly due to the fact that they aren’t sure what to expect. Hopefully this brief blog post will give you some insight into what will happen when you walk through our door for the first time.
Say hello!
Upon your arrival, a member of our staff will greet you and hand you a welcome packet. This packet includes several forms for you to fill out that will help us plan for your lessons in the future. The most exciting of these is our Dance Benefit Selection Sheet: this form lets you choose which of the many benefits of dancing you’d like to get started on first. You’ll choose five options, such as improved mobility/coordination, increased “happy chemicals” in the brain, increased confidence, a way to meet new people and standing out on the dance floor. (There are lots of other options – it may be hard to narrow it down to five!) From there, you’ll rank your Top Five in order of which you want to prioritize right away vs. what you’re willing to work up to.
We encourage our new students to arrive to the first lesson 10-15 minutes early so you can complete these forms at a leisurely pace.
Step out on the floor!
Once your welcome packet is filled out, it’s time to explore the dance floor! One of our instructors will lead you on to the floor so you can begin learning some of the fundamentals of dancing with a partner. Dancing is comprised of many actions you complete on a daily basis, but they can become a little more challenging when you have another person attached to you! Your instructor will help you to navigate how to hold your partner and some basic non-verbal communication skills that will allow you to lead and/or follow your partner while dancing.
Pro Tip: if you have a favorite musical artist or genre, let your instructor know! We want to teach you how to dance to your favorite music, as well as the music you are likely to hear at events you may attend.
Dance Consultation – What are your current strengths?
Everyone has strengths that can aid them on their dance education journey. For some, a history of athleticism translates to excellent balance or hand-eye coordination. Others may come from a musical background, which will make it easier to connect to the timing and character of the music. After your sample lesson, your instructor will break down areas that you are strong in, as well as areas that can improve, and a game plan on how we can work together to make you a well-rounded dance partner.
From there, we will work with you to find a dance program that will fit your schedule and budget so you can continue to cultivate your dance skills and confidence!
Don’t forget to book your next lesson!
Consistency is key when it comes to learning a new skill. We recommend you book your next lesson within a one-week window so you can remember what you learned on this first lesson and continue to build on it. Don’t forget to bring your calendar to your lesson so we can find a good time to get together again soon!
We hope that this overview of your first session with Hearts In Rhythm Dance helps ease your mind and gets you excited for your foray into dancing! A fun, positive learning environment is our highest priority, and we can’t wait to introduce you to our wonderful community.
We look forward to dancing with you soon!! 💃 🕺
